Around 80% of women have either a physical or emotional discomfort during their period. Symptoms can go from dull to severe and affect a lot of girls during those days of the month.
There are different types of symptoms during PMS, and among them is the dysphoric syndrome. It’s a condition in which a woman has severe depression symptoms, irritability, and tension before menstruation, and 40% of women can experience irritability, tension, anxiety, and depression.
Hormonal changes that occur during a woman's menstrual cycle may play a role. Serotonin is a chemical that nerve cells produce and it’s fundamental in this process. Serotonin is found mostly in the digestive system, although it’s also found in blood platelets and throughout the central nervous system.
Serotonin helps with sleeping, eating, digesting, and regulates anxiety and happiness. When there are high levels of serotonin, we tend to feel happier and more capable of dealing with daily tension and stress. When it’s low, we can experience anxiety, stress, and mood swings.
During our periods, serotonin gets lower during PMS and that’s why we can have mood swings.
How can we improve our serotonin levels?
Don’t worry, mood swings are really common but these tricks can help you to feel less moody during your period.
